The August, 1999 sales numbers are out and as expected, Jeep has once again posted record numbers. In addition to being the 13th best selling vehicle in the United States for January-August, 1999, the Jeep Grand Cherokee trounced last year's August sales figures by a whopping 117%! The numbers break down like this: comparing August, 1999 with August, 1998, Wrangler sales slipped 2%, Cherokee sales slipped 6%, while Grand Cherokee sales (no doubt due to anticipation of the 1999 redesign during August, 1998) surged 117%. For the year-to-date numbers (Jan-Aug, 1998 vs. Jan-Aug, 1999), all three models showed an increase: Wrangler +9%, Cherokee +19%, and Grand Cherokee +28%. As we mentioned earlier, the Grand Cherokee was the 13th best selling vehicle in the US through the month of August (last year at this time it was the 16th).
