The Jeep Liberty 38% sales increaes in December allowed it to blow past the Ford Escape as the best-selling compact SUV in United States.

Sales for the Ford Escape plunged about 20,000 units from 2004 to 2005, while sales of the Liberty remained just about flat (about 1,000 fewer were sold in 2005 compared with 2004).

The Toledo Blade has more:

Although Liberty's U.S. sales last year barely dropped, the Escape's plunged 10 percent to 165,122. That resulted in Ford Motor Co. losing the compact SUV title for the first time since 2002.

Meanwhile, the Liberty's and Escape's next two biggest competitors had record years in 2005. The Honda CR-V sold 150,219 vehicles, a 1 percent increase from 2004, and the Chevrolet Equinox sold 130,542, a 55 percent increase, according to automaker reports released yesterday.
