Liberty Unmasked?

Is this the next Jeep? A bunch of our readers have sent us links to this image of what appears to the be 2000 Jeep Liberty. According to the All Fours Jeep Club, the image comes from the January 2001 issue of CAR magazine. Here's what they had to say about it:

The new Cherokee will be available with three engines - a 2.4L 154bhp four-cylinder petrol, a 2.5L 140bhp direct-injection turbo diesel and a new 3.7L 210bhp V6, the replacement for the old 4.0L lump.

The four-cylinder engines are mated only to five-speed manual gearboxes and a choice of either rear-wheel drive or part-time four-wheel drive.  The V6 model adds the option of a four-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel drive system derived from that on the current Grand Cherokee.

It features a new independent front suspension set-up, as predicted, to give improved on-road ride and handling.  It is said that this set up also allows for impressive axle articulation.

So is this image that of the new Jeep? We're not 100% sure, but it seems to fit with all the spy reports that we've seen. We'll keep you posted...
