It was time to work on the steering part of my Jeep CJ5 rebuild so I started searching the WEB for a new kit to replace the very weak and bent drag link and tie rod I currently had in my CJ.
One name came up several times and after reading a few reviews on them I decided to try out
SRC Precision Products 'Tie Rod Steering System'.
I dialed them and my call was immediately answered. It was before 8am EST and needless to say I was pleasantly surprised to have them pick up. Their hours are 7am to 4pm EST.
After talking for a while I settled on the tie rod kit instead of their heim joint kit, since I live where the majority of my wheeling is wet and sandy - the tie rods would most likely last longer. I apreciate them not trying to sell me the more expensive kit just to make a few extra bucks. That is good service!
The description on their site pretty much explains it all -
Jeep CJ Heavy Duty Tie Rod Kit
- fits narrow track or wide track
- 1.125 diameter solid steel rods
- 4 CJ Tie Rod ends, 4 jam nuts, 2 steering rods
- part # CJ40WN Price per kit = $145.00
What it doesn't tell you is that two of the tie rod ends and nuts are reverse thread so you can make adjustments without having to dissasemble the steering - nice touch.
The only thing that is lacking is finishing. Granted many will just slap a coat of paint on them and go but having the option of being powder coated would be a plus. I imagine that a key reason for the low price of the kit is because of no finish.
A comparason shot of the stock linkages and the new SRC Precision versions.
Shipping was fast and the packaging was good. The only thing I didn't like was that I had to plan my day to be home because the package was sent as 'signature required'. I'm not sure why that was as I paid by credit card and I did supply all the correct information for my card. I wish I was told of this stipulation before hand as I would have had it sent to my work address.
Overall SRC is a great operation and I'm very happy
not to have to worry about bending those little steering rods again!
