Has any one changed a stick shift to an automatic in a cj5, and how big or bad a job is it?

In general, automatic transmissions are too long for a CJ5; your rear driveline will be too short.

^^ what he said, that's why jeep only used autos in cj7's. and 8's.

Here's one that has a 700R4 and a Chevy 350. Although it has 2 reversed 9 inchers to accomodate the driveshafts.

Metcage, did you decide what you are going to do?

I own 2 CJ-7's; both have engine, trans, and axle swaps, and both are road trip worthy.

My current project is swapping an automatic in my black one, which currently has an NV4500. I am not sure about a CJ-5 drivetrain, but I can say my rear driveshaft is pretty short and my front driveshaft is lengthened. I would say you should be able to do this swap to a CJ-5, taking into account:
- Using CV joints for both driveshafts
- Limiting amount of lift
- Perhaps using a Ford 9inch high pinion rearend (I use this) at least

good luck!

Lots of CJ5's and Flaties have autos. I trail run with many that have swapped the stick for an auto.
The setup will matter, to wich year and drive train you are running. Pre-72 will have a Spicer 18 T-case that is offset and lower down on the rear output shaft. This helps for drive line angle issues.
If after 1972, you can get a CV (double joint) rear drive shaft and it will take care of the issues.
Also, many have swapped in V6's/I4's and move them farther forward to compensate for the drive line issues.
Yes, it can and has been done by many!

Hello
I just bought an 1973 CJ5 with a 304 and a Automatic Transmission. However it is not stock and I do not know what type it is. It seems to run fine except for the 4X4 shift (moves around - not clear three positions) is very sloppy. Seems to be a 4X4 that is all the way forward, and 2WD in the middle and neutral all the way back. Here are some pictures. If anyone can tell me what kind of Transmission it is that would be great. Also you can see how short the drive shaft is so the Auto trans has room.

As I dont see any adapter plate to the 304 I'm going to guess that is a TF727 from a full size Jeep. I think the trasfer case is a dana 20... (edit: My mistake - Dana 300 behind the tf727) my shifter is sloppy in the same way you describe yet works fine. I'm not sure if thats just how they are or if it's an old, worn out thing.

Congrats on the new Jeep.

Any more pictures of the rear driveshaft? How much lift do you have? If I'm correct about what units are under there it is a swap I may consider; if it works fine in your 73 should work in my 75
