Every time I engage the 4wd it has a grinding sound and has to be forced in. Any ideas as to what it may be?

Trans and transfer case (just in case they are not stock). Do you have a quadratrac?

Are you moving when you go to 4wd? Is the clutch disengaging completely? Is this an auto?

Some information about your Jeep will really help.

does it do it in high and low both?
are you in netural or in gear when you try to shift? with an auto you need to be in Park or N. when you shift to 4wd.
as a side note do you have a twin stick?
As CJ said we need more info.

With an auto you will get that sometimes. I have to turn mine off sometimes to shift from high to low or back again without grinding.
