Does anyone use winter tires to drive their CJ in the winter? I have a 4" lift, 33x10.50r15's, 4.10's, an automatic and a 4.8L Vortec. I am considering selling my current winter truck and using my jeep when it snows.

My 33" BFG AT's on my 7, are rated as M&S.
In fact-I have listed M&S tires on all my vehicles.
This is for 2 Subaru's, CJ7 and 1 ton 4WD crew-cab dually truck.

I have BFG AT's that are rated M+S but they have very little siping and are terrible on the road in the snow.

How much PSI do you run in them? I run about 24-25 psi.
IMHO-those AT's are great all weather tires.
Look at the latest version of the AT's. ;)

I have a complete set of winter tires that I bought for my CJ to use in the winter. I live in Germany though and we get quite a bit of snow where I at and straight M+S tires just don't get the kind of grip I want when there is 1-2 inches of blowing and compressed snow on the way to work because the plows can't keep up.

Do you plan on having 2 sets of rims and tires? I ask because many years ago I worked at a gas station/garage place (you know full service station) and I changed a lot of tires. Winter tires are a pain in the butt to get on and off.

Anyway, Bridgestone Blizzak are constantly top rated winter tires year after year.

Yes, I have two complete sets of wheels and tires. I store the set not currently on the Jeep in the basement with tires from my wife's grocery getter. It costs more up front but I find it more convenient and easier to keep track because I rotate the tires when switch from summer to winter. I did not buy a fifth winter tire for the spare rack though. I keep my summer M+S tire on the spare rack and will rotate it according to the manual when I put summer tires on in the spring.

How big of a difference do the winter tires make? I dont want to spend $1000 on wheels and tires to find out they dont help much. I routinely drive up to 9000-10000ft mountain passes and it is terrifying on the AT's.

You would have to ask me in the spring as I got my CJ in April. On my old truck they made all the difference in the world and I bought my set based on past experience. Plus, in Germany winter tires are required during the winter months and the fines if you get caught without them are stupid. The Polizei have no burden of proof requirement to stop you and check out your vehicle for safety related stuff either, sometimes they just do it because they are bored at least that is according to a friend of mine who is a German cop

From everything I just read, winter tires have silica added to th compound to ensure they stay soft and flexible in cold weather, AT tires don't. They also have specifically designed tread patterns for snow, not just to wipe water away. The Jalaponik link had a cool video demonstrating the difference.

Thanks for the links! I will look into this some more before I buy a set of tires. Luckily winter is a few months away!
