I took my Jeep CJ5 into the La Plata Mountains.

With lots of snowmelt the waterfall was impressive.

I drove up the main valley until I couldn't go any further without going off trail.

The side trails are much less traveled.

I took the trail up into Tomahawk Basin.

This trail was narrow at times.

I could tell I was the first one to drive up this trail.

Here too I was stopped by a snow drift.

As I was heading back out of Tomahawk Basin I found a place to stop for lunch. I brought a sandwich.

Next I drove up Deadwood Mountain. It was obvious I was the first to go up this trail in 2022.

There were lots of obsticals in the way, mostly fallen trees and snow drifts.

I was able to simply drive over this tree.

But this tree was too high to drive over.

I used my winch to pull the tree onto the trail. Then I could drive over it.

I came across this snow drift.

This was the end of the road for this trail.

I hiked a little further and saw this:

On the way back I had to cross the La Plata River.

This was DEEP! I had water coming out the vents on my hood.

Great pictures Dave. Thanks for posting those up. Going to try and get out that way next year. Retirement will give me the time I need to finally do that.

I'm so jealous

Spectacular scenery Dave! I can't wait to take my family into the high country later this season when more of the snow drifts have melted and some of the trails officially open up.

Thanks for posting and sharing with us!
