Misc. In need of exhaust flange gasket?

I have read some don't need a donut gasket. Going through mine for leaks and at the moment mine does not have a gasket in between the manifold and lead pipe. I'll attach photos but can you use some kind of exhaust sealant to improve and prevent leaks or use a donut gasket anyway? Mine had been leaking after tightening down the bolts. 1979 258 inline six. I have used Permatex # 80335 muffler and tailpipe sealer with success.
